Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz, coloured by trace iron and natural irradiation. Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Uruguay are the largest modern sources, prized for their large geode formations. Zambia produces some of the deepest, most saturated purple stones. Other notable sources include Russia (the Ural Mountains, historically the most prized "Siberian" amethyst), South Korea, and India (Maharashtra, Karnataka).
